Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated by submitting entries to their representative’s office.

Panels of district artists then select the winning entries that are recognized in their district as well as an annual awards ceremony in Washington. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
This year, MCS 10th grader Sophia Acon and 9th grader Karen Linares have submitted artwork for the competition. Sophia submitted a photograph taken in Venezuela while Karen submitted a pencil still life.

On the elementary school front, MCS 5th graders have been very involved in their science studies recently and are tackling the subject of ecosystems. In an effort to engage students fully, students were charged with not only creating projects of various ecosystems but of also making presentations to their class explaining each project.

On the alumni scene, Justin Marono, Valedictorian of the MCS Class of 2017 and currently a student at FIU, will be studying Mandarin Chinese at Zhejiang University. This is one of China’s oldest, most selective, and most prestigious institutions of higher education.

For four weeks, he will be working on his Mandarin Chinese language skills through rigorous lessons in Chinese history, art, culture, and economy. The course also includes various field trips and weekend excursions. The university is located in the city of Hangzhou on the east coast of China, described by Marco Polo as the “City of Heaven.” The university is located in the city’s higher education garden district.

Yet another alumna, Alina Andrews, MCS Valedictorian of the Class of 2015, is completing her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Alina has been accepted to Columbia University, UC Berkley, and Johns Hopkins University to pursue her master’s degree in biomedical engineering and she has chosen to remain at Johns Hopkins as it is ranked #1 in this field.

Miami Christian’s athletic department is proud of the success of their teams this past year. Congratulations go out to MCS Senior, Jason Garcia who has been accepted to and offered baseball scholarships from Alabama A & M University. This is the first of many for MCS athletes.

With but a few weeks to go before the end of the school year, registration is now open and all are invited to call today for a personal tour, 305-221-7754 (ext. 773).
