South Florida PBS (WPBT & WXEL) presents a month-long list of exceptional programs that shine the light and celebrate the LGBTQ+ experience and milestones.
The celebration launched with a June 6 presentation of “Stonewall Uprising: American Experience,” which chronicled how police raided the Stonewall Inn gay bar in New York City on June 28, 1969, causing the street to erupted into violent protests that lasted six days. The Stonewall riots marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.

American Masters: Terrence McNally: Every Act Of Life: The life, career and
inspirations of the complicated and brilliant Emmy and four-time Tony Award-winning writer Terrence McNally. Features new interviews with the groundbreaking playwright, F. Murray Abraham, Christine Baranski, Edie Falco, Nathan Lane, Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Rita Moreno and other luminaries, plus the voices of Dan Bucatinsky, Bryan Cranston and Meryl Streep. The Lavender Scare: Learn the untold story of how tens of thousands of homosexual Federal workers were either fired or denied employment in the 1950s, stirring outrage in the gay community and starting an LGBTQ rights movement with an unlikely hero at the forefront. P.O.V. Gospel Of Eureka: P.O.V. beams the spotlight on drag shows and a passion play in a small Arkansas town. The Gospel of Eureka takes a personal and often comical look at negotiating differences between religion and belief through performance, political action and partnership. The Day It Snowed in Miami: A documentary film tracing the political activism behind an equal-rights statute in Miami, and how it galvanized the gay rights movement in Florida and beyond. Thirty-five years ago, as snowflakes prepared to dust palm trees in a city known for its warmth, Miami-Dade County lawmakers unknowingly debated an issue that would ignite a political maelstrom. We’ll Meet Again: Join Ann Curry as people who first met during the early days of the LGBTQ movement reunite. Tom longs to find the friend who helped him accept his sexuality while Paul searches for the student activist whose courage changed his life. Watch on WXEL Monday, June 17 at 8 PM.
Independent Lens The Untold Stories Of Armistead Maupin: This documentary examines the life and work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. Watch on WXEL Monday, June 17 at 9 PM.
The Committee: is a documentary film about the little-known Florida Legislative
Investigative Committee of the State Legislature from 1956-1965. Florida Senator Charley Johns chaired the committee, and its aim was to root out communist and homosexual teachers and students from state universities. It was successful in either firing or expelling more than 200 suspected gay and lesbian citizens. Watch on WPBT June 18 at 11 PM.
Penny: Champion Of The Marginalized: is a multi-dimensional portrait of Penny
Cooper, a celebrated criminal defense attorney, art collector, supporter of female artists, and protector of the underdog. Cooper’s life brims with stories mirroring the profound changes in our country from the 1940s to the present. In this revealing documentary, Cooper proves herself quite the raconteur with seemingly unlimited anecdotes. Her stories are engaging; sometimes funny, and sometimes distressing. The film is a collection of these moments as told by Cooper and the people who have been impacted by her dynamic spirit. Watch on WPBT June 18 at 11:30 PM.
Vicious: tells the story of partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi),
who have lived together in a small central London flat for nearly 50 years. Constantly picking each other apart and holding on to petty slights for decades, Freddie and Stuart are always at each other’s throats, cracking snide remarks aimed at the other’s age, appearance and flaws. However, underneath their vicious, co-dependent fighting, they have a deep love for one another. Watch on WPBT Sunday’s at 11:30 PM.
