Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle has been selected by the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association (FPAA) for the Association’s highest award, the Eugene Whitworth Award.
The FPAA, whose members are Florida’s 20 elected State Attorneys and over 1900 Assistant State Attorneys, was created in 1986 to serve the needs of Florida’s prosecutors. The FPAA has long given special recognition to those prosecutors who have made outstanding contributions for the protection of the people of Florida and whose accomplishments have moved the criminal justice system forward to better meet the needs
of an ever-changing state.
The Eugene Whitworth Award has historically been given to elected State Attorneys who were leaving office in recognition of “outstanding achievements and contributions to the Criminal Justice System”. However, this year, the FPAA has honored State Attorney Fernandez Rundle with a truly unique distinction. For the first time in its history, the FPAA chose to bestow the Eugene Whitworth Award to an active and sitting State Attorney.
“Of Florida’s 21 million residents, only a handful fully understand the complexities and difficulties that each of our 20 elected State Attorneys face every day as they work to protect the people of their communities,” said State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. “To have the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association, these same State Attorneys, present me with the Eugene Whitworth Award, is much more than a recognition of our efforts to bring a livable wage to our young attorneys. It is also a testimonial to our communities that each of our prosecutors have made, and will continue to make, an important difference in the lives of the people of this state. I gladly accept this special honor on their behalf.”
State Attorney Fernandez Rundle will be officially recognized during a luncheon awards ceremony on Monday, July 11, 2022, in the City of Doral, Florida.
