Several Miami Christian School students are in the spotlight this month.

Sonali Khiyani selected for UM research program

Junior Sonali Khiyani was selected by the University of Miami to participate in The Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer High School Scholars Research Program, an opportunity to obtain research experience in a biomedical research laboratory at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Coral Gables campus. Students are paired with another scholar and work as a team under the direction of a research mentor.

Junior Alina Andrews has also been chosen by the UM to participate in The JJ Vance Memorial Summer Internship

in Biological and Computational Sciences, an honor for outstanding juniors in good standing from Miami-area high schools, The program provides interns with a challenging eight-week research course, working with faculty and post-doctoral fellows. Each intern is paired up with a HIHG staff member, post-doc or faculty member.

On the sports front Senior Cristian Rivera was chosen to play in the Miami- Dade All-Star Team Baseball Game May 30. Cristian has already signed with St. Petersburg College and will play in the Rookie League with the New York Yankee team, “The Legends” during the summer.

Junior Alex Yaniz was named Miami Dade County’s “Bowler of the Year” at the Miami Herald Athletic Breakfast.He also placed on the Men’s All-Dade First BowlingTeam. The Herald’s annual sports banquet May 20 also celebrated several other top performing athletes, to be reported in the future.

On the academic front, Miami Christian gained great success at the National History Day Competitions that take place annually in each Florida county. Five categories are available for high school student presentation: research paper, documentary, website, tri-fold, and role play. MCS students took four of the five categories with the most wins of any high school in Miami-Dade County and qualified seven students for the statewide competition in Tallahassee.

On the elementary school scene, as temperatures rose toward the end of the school year, the elementary students decided to cool things down on “Elementary Water Day,” a fun in the sun romp at numerous water slides and campus. Campus activities, it is no wonder MCS students love school activities and learnings.

In April, middle school students hosted “Earth Day” events for elementary students with booths, activities, food and games available to teach younger students how to practice wise conservation techniques and get into recycling.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
