Following an extensive search, Albizu University, known internationally for its multicultural post-graduate higher education in psychology and other human services fields, announced the appointment of Yianni (John) Vassiliou, Ph.D. as Chancellor of its Miami Campus. Dr. Vassiliou assumes his new role in January 2025 and will succeed Dr. Sharrie R. Dean, who has been acting as Interim Chancellor since October 2022.

“I am confident that Dr. Vassiliou will excel in guiding our Miami Campus in alignment with Albizu’s unified strategic plan,” said Dr. Nelson E. Soto, President of Albizu University. “His outstanding record in enrollment management and his extensive experience in fostering academic and professional pathways for multilingual and multicultural communities align seamlessly with our mission and values. On behalf of the entire Albizu community, I am pleased to extend Dr. Vassiliou a warm welcome.”

With a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Florida Atlantic University and an illustrious career in higher education spanning nearly three decades, Dr. Vassiliou is a passionate advocate for cultural diversity and brings a dynamic, forward-thinking approach to advancing mental health, cultural competence, and social responsibility in South Florida and beyond. Among his accomplishments, Dr. Vassiliou led an increase in enrollment at the University of Miami through targeted outreach, enhanced student support, and data-driven decision-making. He has excelled in student success initiatives, creating programs such as the STARS Project at Miami Dade College, which increased both retention and graduation rates by building a holistic student support network. In academic program development, Dr. Vassiliou introduced over 10 new workforce-relevant certificate programs at the University of Miami, expanding access to fields in Technology, Health Sciences, and Business. As a community-oriented leader, Dr. Vassiliou also forged partnerships with community-based organizations, hospitals, and government agencies, increasing scholarships, internship and employment opportunities for students, as well as securing grants, including a $1.3 million Title III grant to expand program offerings.

“I am honored to join this prestigious institution and look forward to building on its strong foundation while expanding its influence in the fields of mental health, psychology, and health sciences,” said Dr. Vassiliou. “I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Board of Trustees, University President Dr. Soto, and the Search Committee for their trust in selecting me for this role. It is an immense privilege to be given the opportunity to lead at an institution with such a vital mission and dedicated community,” he added.

A visionary leader in educational innovation, Dr. Vassiliou has spearheaded the integration of technology and learning by launching programs with online and hybrid options, workforce-ready digital credentials, and stackable certifications. His implementation of AI-driven analytics and predictive tools has boosted student engagement and completion, positioning institutions as leaders in accessible, tech-driven education. These efforts are proof that Dr. Vassiliou is not only a leader who adapts to educational trends, but also anticipates and innovates to meet the evolving needs of students, employers, and the community.
