American Cancer Society hosts community walk kick-off rally at CityPlace

“It was a really big shew,” is how the late Ed Sullivan might have characterized the recent kickoff rally of the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” at Doral CityPlace.

The Aug. 22 event, sponsored by Doral CineBistro, highlighted how individuals and businesses may participate in the upcoming community walk supporting the organization’s work in saving lives from breast cancer. The kick-off meeting also featured inspirational stories from breast cancer survivors.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Since 1993, more than 13 million supporters have raised more than $810 million nationwide. Last year, 11,000 walkers in Miami-Dade County helped to raise more than $460,000. This kickoff provided the community members the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the Miami walk slated for Oct. 28.

Funds raised through Making Strides walks enable the American Cancer Society to invest in groundbreaking research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

“As we join with others in the Making Strides walk, we celebrate breast cancer survivors, pay tribute to loved ones lost, and raise funds to move us one step closer to a world without breast cancer,” said Event Chairman Orlando Silva, MD. “From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.”

“CityPlace Doral was honored to participate in the American Cancer Society’s kickoff event. Lighting up the fountain in pink was a great moment for the community to show support for this amazing cause,” said Bill Shewalter, senior VP of development at The Related Group.
