March promises to be a busy one for charities. Several Doral businesses including the Doral Business Council Forum are assembling teams to participate in “A Safe Haven for Newborns Walk” at Amelia Earhart Park on Saturday, Mar. 14. At a recent planning meeting for the Walk, Nick Silverio, organization founder, announced saving the 219th baby the same morning. What a blessing and inspiration for all those at the meeting! For the organization’s first fund raising lap, members are partnering with the Doral Business Council for a reception, generously- donated and hosted by Sergio’s in Kendall on Feb. 9, 6-8 p.m. For a $15 donation, guests will enjoy one complimentary drink (wine, beer or soda) and hors d’oeuvres as well as a chance to win some great prizes. Sergio’s is located at 8807 S.W. 107 Ave. For more information, call Marti Bueso at 786-286-2741 or e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Junior Orange Bowl Committee, an organization with great economic impact on Doral during its festival season, held business meeting Jan. 20 at the new V Café, next to Vicky Bakery on Ponce and University. Owner Michael Belaustegui provided great food and yummy desserts for the crowd and even sent many home with take out. Members were later abuzz with plans for the organization’s first Gala, chaired by Michelle Benitez-Bermudez on Feb. 28 at the Westin Colonnade. This “Denims & Diamonds” affair promises to be great fun.
Guys can come in jeans and women in diamonds and finery, a win-win for all, especially for thousands of children JOBC showcases every year. For information, call the JOBC office at 305-662-1210. Sponsorships and tickets are still available.
Yet another organization aiding children – the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (whose membership includes many women from Doral) is preparing its annual Casino Night Mar. 7 at the clubhouse, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. to support the club’s free children’s dental clinic.
The “Havana Nights” casino night fund raiser is the best deal in town for a fun evening out with gaming tables, food, one complimentary drink, more than 100 great silent auction items up for bid, and a reasonably-priced cash bar. Casino chips are only $50 per person in advance; $60 at the door. For tickets, visit online www.gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org/#!casinonight/c1ghi.
The Club’s May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic provides more than $220,000 in free dental care for the children of the working poor throughout Miami-Dade County, a critical resource for many who may fall between the cracks in our healthcare system. In the midst of the fundraising effort, the women took time to have fun with a Salsa Class and Mexican-styled dinner, coordinated by Ruth Martinez at the Jan. 21 meeting. This dynamic group is always looking for help to support the clinic and many other outreach efforts. Women wishing to serve the community are encouraged to check the Clinic web site and visit.
Picnics are the name of the game this time of year as Profit Inc. holds its annual picnic Feb. 8 at Tropical Park and coincidentally, Rotarians are also planning a picnic for District 6990 that same Sunday. More on those events next time.
The WGC Cadillac Championship is right around the corner and in light of that, the Doral Business Council Forum invited Emma Piper, World Golf Championship Senior Tournament Manager, to address the group about Executive Women’s Day at Trump National Doral on Mar. 2. Presented by Astellas for the past three years, this daylong event has been part of the Championship activities, targeting women and covering topics of corporate leadership, economic and career development, and professional networking. Tickets range from $275 and come with many perks. For more information, call 305-392-4948. Also speaking that morning: long-time DBC member and Past Forum Chair Marti Bueso representing Home Financing Center. A networking group under the Doral Business Council umbrella, the Forum convenes the first and third Wednesday of each month. The dynamic group is category-exclusive, requiring DBC membership to participate.
