More than 800 residents participated in the American Diabetes Association’s “Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes” Sept. 21, raising more than $100,000 to prevent and cure diabetes and improve those affected by diabetes.
“Thanks to the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of our Red Striders, teams, volunteers, and sponsors, Step Out: Walk was a resounding success,” said Miami-Dade Deputy Mayor Russell Benford.

Nearly 26 million including 200,000 in Miami-Dade are afflicted with and among an estimated 18.8 million diagnosed, seven million are unaware they have the disease. If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050, the Association estimates.
