Students, faculty, and Christian’s parents were in attendance for the announcement. Christian Rodriguez is one of just two National Merit Scholar semifinalists in the city of Doral. This prestigious distinction is awarded annually to about 16,000 students nationwide from a pool of 1.4 million candidates in over 22,000 high schools across the country. Christian qualified for the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Semifinalists become finalists by completing several requirements like maintaining a very high academic record, writing an essay, and earning a high score on the SAT. Finalists are announced in early February. From this pool of finalists, about 7,600 are chosen to receive a National Merit Scholarship.
DSA Principal Ben Troge said this about the Divine Savior Academy senior, “Over the past ten years Christian has done an extraordinary job of modeling what it means to be a well-rounded individual inside and outside the classroom, while simultaneously standing up to the rigorous academics taught here at DSA. Congratulations, Christian!”
