This time of year, there are no shortage of fun events to attend. Every weekend, walkers and runners can find a walk but the one walk close to this writer’s heart is the Mar. 14 5K Walk at Amelia Earhart Park for A Safe Haven for Newborns, an organization that saves the lives of babies who would have been abandoned or worse. The Doral Business Council is one of many teams participating this year, joining forces with A Safe Haven to hold a “First Lap Kick-off” party at Sergio’s in Kendall. Sergio’s generously donated drinks and hors d’oeuvres for this mini-fundraiser Feb. 9. Among those attending was Safe Haven founder Nick Silverio who proudly announced they had just saved another newborn, totaling 220 of those saved. Save Apr. 26 when Paws 4 You holds its 5K Run/Walk, hoping to replicate last year’s success that saved countless dogs from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services. Changing it up a bit, this year’s event will be held early evening at Killian Greens Golf Club, featuring an officially- timed race on a certified course for our more serious runners with a celebration to follow. All are encouraged to attend and bring friends, families, and dogs!

On the hotel scene, the InterContinental at Doral Miami recently welcomed Jose A. Muñoz as the new restaurant chef. Munoz, a stellar chef with several achievement awards, has created a new menu to include a variety of local ingredients and layers of flavors. He previously was chef de partie at Fountainbleau on Miami Beach and holds a bachelor degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from the University of Puerto Rico.

Finally, remember to save Apr. 11 for Doral’s “Relay For Life” at JC Bermudez Park. Until next time, keep making each day count.
