The Caregiver Resource Center at United HomeCare, one of South Florida’s largest home health agencies, is offering a new, free support group for people in the early stages of Alzheimers and their caregivers.
Alzheimers disease, the most common type of dementia, is part of a family of dementia illnesses that includes vascular dementia and mixed dementia, among others. Individuals with early-stage Alzheimers disease and related dementias retain the ability to participate in daily activities and give-and-take dialogue. With support, they can learn to cope and plan ahead for the future.
A free, eight-week support group will incorporate joint sessions, attended by individuals with early-stage Alzheimers and their caregivers, as well as congruent sessions where caregivers and their loved ones will meet separately to allow for open dialogue with peers.
Led by a United HomeCare licensed clinical social worker, topics to be covered include understanding the diagnosis and available treatments, sharing experiences with memory challenges, learning about coping mechanisms and available community resources, the benefits of cognitive stimulation, and planning ahead for the legal, health and financial implications of a diagnosis.
The sessions will be held at United HomeCares Caregiver Resource Center, 8400 N.W. 33 St. (Suite 400) in Doral, from 2-3:30 p.m., starting Thursday, Oct. 11 and continuing each Thursday thru Dec. 6 (omitting Nov. 22).
