On May 10, Trump National Resort hosted A Safe Haven for Newborns’ Annual Golf Tournament celebrating the birth of its 308th baby saved from abandonment.
Unlike last year, when thunderstorms curtailed the event, this year’s weather was picture perfect. Players enjoyed a box lunch and drinks before start and then dinner and awards following play.
Among the many notables enjoying the tournament were two football greats: UM’s Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde and University of Florida’s Hall of Famer Tom Shannon. Others regulars always there having a good time were the Murphy boys, Tom and Mike, from Coastal Construction, a company that supports so many worthwhile charities in our community.
Kudos to Gina Perez for chairing the event and all the many volunteers who help founder Nick Silverio in A Safe Haven for Newborn’s mission.
The Women’s Chamber of Commerce Fashion Show Brunch attracted a great crowd on May 4 at Provident Blue in Doral. The featured fashions were created by designer Carlos Marrero who conducted the entertainment and gave the ladies attending the event some great discounts on his apparel.
Diane Superville, president of the Chamber, welcomed guests and members thanking Provident for providing a lovely setting. Diane, owner of Superville Travel, is also the founder of another non-profit called Fashion for Charity and a member of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club many of whose members live and work in Doral.
In fact, a few of those club members who attended the brunch, were later seen at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club fundraiser, a Pre Mothers’ Day Tea that same day held at the club’s historic clubhouse. Club members and guests attended this royal tea with mother, grandmothers, aunts and daughters many donning hats and even gloves for the affair enjoyed by all.
A pop up store by Kendra Scott and a small silent auction, all to benefit the club’s free children dental clinic, gave guests a chance to buy items for their moms or themselves. Silver and china service with beautiful table decor enhanced the program that included a lecture on the history of the formal tea which is not a high tea but actually a low tea.
As part of United Way’s National Small Business Week, civic community leaders gathered for a Connect Miami Happy Hour at Dragonfly in Downtown Doral on May 9.
United Way’s Elyssa Linares welcomed guests thanking the restaurant for its support. Doral’s Business Forum Group was well represented with Pete De La Torre, Juan Zenck, Arely Ruiz, Oscar Mendez, Julian Harradon, Jr., High Quinn and Willy Espinosa, to mention a few.
Amor 107.5 and Alberto Sardinas coordinated a drive for the children of Venezuela in critical need of supplies on Saturday, May 18. Our Lady of Guadalupe in Doral provided a great location for the day-long event attracting many generous donations from the community.
Finally, on the business front, Wawa recently opened three locations in South Florida with next one coming to Doral at 33rd St. and 87th Avenue at the former site of Tony Roma’s. Wawa stores in South Florida are not your typical Wawa as they have enhanced their menu options with items enjoyed by our Latin population.
Lots of folks were in town from Wawa Pennsylvania to celebrate the openings including Wawa Treasurer who also serves on the Wawa Foundation board and shared with this writer the many initiative Wawa is doing already in Miami to make a positive impact with local schools.
