A free seminar and cooking demonstration with chef Jackie Salas kicked off a series of events offering Hispanic Americans the opportunity to learn about Medicare and healthy Latin cooking on June 22.

The cooking demonstration, held at the Jorge Mas Canosa Youth Center in Sweetwater, encouraged preparing traditional Latin meals and desserts in a healthier way and was sponsored by UnitedHealthcare to aid senior living.

Adaptations of dishes such as arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) and arroz con leche (rice pudding) illustrated how favored Latin meals can remain part of a healthy diet, said Chef Salas.

“Delicious flavors of authentic Latin food can be achieved using healthier ingredients and techniques,” she explained. “I enjoyed sharing with Miami seniors healthier adaptations of traditional Latin dishes that call for simple ingredients and basic cooking skills.”

Following the cooking demonstration, participants were invited to attend one of three educational seminars on Medicare June 25-27 in Hialeah Gardens, Miami and Sweetwater.

The seminars were held to assist Hispanic-American seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries to make health care coverage decisions by providing basic information about Medicare, including the different parts of the program, eligibility requirements and enrollment windows.

UnitedHealthcare offers other resources tailored for Spanish-speaking beneficiaries, including solucionesdemedicare.com web site where beneficiaries and caregivers can find clear information about Medicare complexities. For program details, call 1-866-296- 9489.
