Just weeks after Doral City Council made a cringeworthy public spectacle of the dismissal of City Manager Barbie Hernandez, they reprised it today at a special meeting to pick her replacement and a new city attorney. The scene belonged in a school playground where a trio of bullies ganged up on Mayor Christi Fraga interrupting and silencing her. Not only was the behavior of Digna Cabral, Oscar Puig-Corve and Maureen Porras reprehensible, they plowed through a 3-2 vote (Fraga and Rafael Pineyro dissenting) to approve an interim city manager who expressed doubts about hitting the ground running, and an interim attorney openly running for School Board. Community members felt hoodwinked. Those who spoke asking for transparency were aghast when the meeting was adjourned abruptly. The agenda was staged to silence dissent for the trio’s hand-picked candidates who will likely act obediently on a hidden agenda and betray the public’s trust, just when we need representative government most.
