Miami Christian School students are constantly participating in sports, music, creative and performing arts and academic competitions, trying every sport, art and music experience available. At the same time, they’re learning everything from robotics to Mandarin Chinese with dual enrollment and AP options as well. AMONG many successes achieved most recently is the MCS Band, directed by Derek Shute. On an April 4 trip to the Orlando Music Festival, the band received a Superior rating with a brilliant performance that included “All the Pretty Horses” by Ann McGinty and “Polly Oliver” by Thomas Root. On the sports front, MCS Junior Alex Yaniz won the Second Annual Florida High School Hi-Five Tournament, an individual competition among the top five bowlers from Miami-Dade, Broward, West Palm, Lee and Martin Counties. Yaniz averaged a 228 for the six games to win first place. In the Junior League competition, Alex also bowled his second career “Perfect” 300 game. At the MCS Victors Baseball Team last regular game of the season, seniors and their family members who were present were honored. Team members recognized were Ernie Angueiro, Elias Bure, Victor Dacal, David Lopez, Josh Carvajal, Miguel Perez, Johan Porras, Ruben Quesada, Christian Rivera, Cristian Ramirez, Cristian Sanchez, and Alex Roque.
CONGRATS to Sharon Berkley (fifth grade), Christine Rosillo (eighth grade) and senior Andrea Sinclair, chosen by faculty to represent Miami Christian School at the ISSF Star Luncheon honoring positive characteristics. They joined about 750 other individuals at the ISSF’s annual event held at MACC.

On the art front, Chris Abello, Naomi Granado, and Carlos Lopez, MCS Art students or Art Club members are participating in the 2014 A n n u a l Congressional Art Competition for District 25 with Congressman Mario Diaz Balart. MCS seniors took their Senior Trip to California where they visited Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Catalina Island. A great trip by all accounts as the students enjoyed parasailing, beach time, visiting Hollywood sites and attending a chapel service in Hollywood. Of course, a day at Disneyland was also included. Before Easter break, elementary students enjoyed an Easter egg hunt with classes taking turns hiding eggs for each other, and then cheering their classmates who searched the playground for candy and goodies.

In addition, the middle schools took full advantage of an arctic blast when they traveled to North Carolina for their annual retreat. Several students had never skied before and took full advantage of the snow to learn. The week-long trip also included numerous camping activities while taking in the local color and enjoying the vast beauty of nature. FINALLY, as the school year comes to a close, graduating seniors are getting acceptance notices from numerous colleges and receiving lots of scholarships offers. Graduation is 8 p.m. in the Graham Center Ballroom at FIU on Friday, May 30th.
