Miami Christian School r e c e n t l y graduated a class of 30 students who were accepted to 48 different colleges and universities. Amazingly enough, this group of 30 seniors was offered more than $4.7 million in scholarships over their four years at the university level. Among the group of high achieving students was Alina Andrews, accepted to the #1 ranked Biomedical Engineering program in the country (limited to only 100 students) at Johns Hopkins University. Yet another stand out was Naomi Granado accepted at the #1 ranked Game Design and Development Program in the county (only 24 students allowed) at the University of Southern California. In addition, Elizabeth Rosillo was accepted the #1 ranked regional school in the south, Highpoint University while Jaime Gonzalez was offered a baseball scholarship university to the seventh-rated baseball program in the country at Cisco University. Two other students, Marquill Smith and Lazaro Gonazlez, were offered basketball and baseball scholarships to Division I universities, one at San Francisco University and the other Florida International University.
Congratulations to the MCS athletic department with their many achievements this 2014-15 school year: winning District Championships in Bowling, Boys’ Basketball and Girls’ Softball; winning Regionals in Boys’ Basketball; and winning a State Championship in Boys’ Basketball. Senior Alex Yaniz was named The Miami Herald’s Top Player in the County in Bowling and Senior Marquill Smith was named First Team All State in Basketball. Seven MCS students were named to the 2015 2A-15 All District Baseball Team by www.MiamiDadeHighSchoolBaseball.com: Sebastian Dayoub, Jordan Gonzalez, Lazaro Gonzalez, J C Llaser, Chris Otero, Yoel Rojas and Aldo Ripley.
Kudos as well to the MCS Fine Arts Department with their many successes this 2014-15 school year. The MCS Jazz Band took 1st Place in the Music US Festival 2015 at Universal Studios while the Band received an Excellent score in the District 20 MPA competition. Middle school music student, Samara Shute, was invited to participate in the District 20 MPA Honor Band and received a Superior rating in the District 20 Solo and Ensemble Competition. Yet another two students, Christopher Abello and Mark Rodriguez, were recognized for their participation in the Congressional Youth Art Competition.
Community service is always an important part of what MCS students are encouraged and expected to do and participation this year, as always, was great from Purchasing school uniforms for all the students in the Sunil’s Home orphanage with proceeds from the MCS organic garden, participating in the Miami Dade County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program Day, making packages for His House for foster children, visiting FRIENDS, Inc. – a horse shelter in Southwest Ranches, and providing shoeboxes for needy children in Central America, to raising funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma.
