Both Miami Christian School men’s and women’s basketball teams won their respective District 15, 2-A Championships during Florida High School state playoff action in February.

The men defeated Champagnat Catholic 72-45 for the District title before heading to a Regional Feb. 20 to lose to nationally-ranked and undefeated defending state champion Boca Raton Grandview, 81-67.

After the District win, Eduardo Camacho, was named the Miami Herald’s “Athlete of the Week” for scoring 31 points and having 12 assists in the District win.

Meanwhile, the MCS Lady Victors defeated Hebrew Academy 59-14 to become the District 15 2-A Champions for 2016 before also losing a heartbreaker against Grandview 51-49 in the regional quarter finals.

Basketball and homecoming became a combo at MCS with a week of fun activities followed by the homecoming basketball game. This year’s Homecoming Court included: Freshmen Prince and Princess, Marcos Pedraza and Andrea Babun; Sophomore Prince and Princess, Miguel Diaz and Samantha Delgado; Junior Prince and Princess, Anthony Munoz and Keitlyn Babyn; Senior Prince and Princess, David Pretty and Jesica Garcia; Senior Prince and Princess, Alex Martinez and Samantha Santiago; and King and Queen, Aldo Ripley and Victoria Vila.

Crowning of the court followed a week of “Spirit Activities” as high school classes competed against each other in games and dress-up opportunities to win Spirit points.

MCS elementary school students participated in a Hundredth Day of School event with different fun activities and parties. Mrs. Rafuls’ third grade class dressed up as if they had aged one year for every day in school, providing some hilarious takes on what the youngsters believed they would look like as centenarians.

Finally, congratulations to the MCS students who participated in the District 20 Honor Band held on Jan. 30 at Ransom Everglades. Those participating included Sharon Berkely on the flute; Samara Shute, oboe; Joshua Caleman, trombone; and Chrissy Rosillo, clarinet.

Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
