Basketball season is certainly an exciting time for students at Miami Christian School, with the boys team, under Coach Andrew Moran ranked fifth in South Florida as of mid-January. Over the holidays, the team participated in the Junior Orange Bowl tournament, placing third among top teams both nationally and statewide. In what figured to be a close game, MCS won by 19 points over Calusa Prep. Crowds also packed the gymnasium as the team won its Homecoming game.
All enjoyed the game and refreshments from the PDQ food truck.
On the academic front, Middle School students researched and developed science projects, each tested by student-developed hypotheses (at least three times). After findings were presented, discussions followed on what each student might change if re-doing the same experiment. Project topics selections were compelling, ranging from: “Is there enough electricity in a potato to power a light?” to solar ovens boiling water and frying eggs. S’mores: “The effects of differing types of music on heartbeat” and “Pet characteristics,” among many others.
Congratulations to MCS Senior Chris Abello who has received multiple scholarship offers including a four-year $48,000 Dominican Scholarship and acceptance at Molloy University College in New York, as well as an institutional merit-based, four-year Magis Scholarship of $52,000 for Loyola University in New Orleans.
MCS once again participated in The Hour of Code, a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180 countries, providing each student during a given week in December to spend one hour on Computer Science and Coding. The event was a hit with the elementary, middle and high school students the week of Dec.8 -14, under the direction of Mrs. Ocana Burci. Studies have shown that if students start working early on computer coding, foundations for success are laid in almost every 21st century career path. Working on such activities, students develop problem solving skills, logic, and creativity while having fun.
MCS Librarian, Michelle Zanon, provided another exciting event for the elementary students, recruiting local author, Jewel the Fairy, to visit the school. Kindergarten through second grade students were treated to a reading of her newly published book. Fun ensued as she posed for photos, shared pixie dust with all and donated copies of her book to the school library. Apparently, the children were so excited about meeting her, they even wrote fan letters. Mrs. Zanon was thrilled to have someone motivate students to read; now, there’s a waiting list at the library to check out her new book.
