Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated by submitting entries to their representative’s office.
Panels of district artists then select the winning entries that are recognized in their district as well as an annual awards ceremony in Washington. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. This year, MCS 10th grader Sophia Acon and 9th grader Karen Linares have submitted artwork for the competition. Sophia submitted a photograph taken in Venezuela while Karen submitted a pencil still life.
On the elementary school front, MCS 5th graders have been very involved in their science studies recently and are tackling the subject of ecosystems. In an effort to engage students fully, students were charged with not only creating projects of various ecosystems but of also making presentations to their class explaining each project.
