This year Doral’s Relay for Life is themed “Relay City: Building a Cancer-free Community.” This annual overnight event will take place from April 25th to April 26th with a schedule full of fundraising, entertainment, inspiration, and community togetherness at JC Bermudez Park in Doral.

Doral’s Relay for Life kicks off at 7pm with the Opening Ceremony and traditional Survivor Lap. The Relay proceeds as team walkers continuously relay the track all night long. Each team sets up a booth themed as a community building. For example, Divine Savior Academy’s team will construct their booth as a “school,” while other teams will create banks, restaurants, and stores. These “community buildings” will create a “Relay City” to support the theme of “Building a Cancer-free Community.”

These team booths sell food, provide giveaways, and set-up fund-raising games and activities. On the Relay for Life Stage a continuous line-up of entertainment will perform (Doral taekwondo studios, Jazzercise groups, and local bands), while activities like soccer games and karaoke will take place in the center of the track.

The highlight of the evening is the Luminaria Ceremony at 9:30pm. During this “Ceremony of Hope” an honorary speaker reminds attendees that “even during the darkest times, there is always the light of hope.” A moment of silence is observed to remember those that have been lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer, and rejoice with those who have fought and won.

“What people don’t know about Relay for Life is that the majority of the money we raise goes to members of our community here in Doral to support cancer survivors, their caregivers and families. It truly is a community event!” comments Event Chair Jamie Fischer.

“If you’d like to get involved, there are many ways to help,” encourages Fischer
