Finally, the big day (April 11) is almost here for Doral’s Relay For Life at Doral Central Park (formerly JC Bermudez Park, a name it will always be for this writer, much like Joe Robbie Stadium). Look for great participation from the community with a special thanks to DiVieto Ristorante that helped Our Lady of Guadalupe Church raise an additional $600 for theWalk by donating a portion of the checks of dining parishioners one day in March. In addition, you can bet Chef Alfredo will be back to provide his delicious lasagna for church sales to raise even more money on Walk Day.There’s still time to register as a team or individual for this cancer-fighting event. Doral Rotarians along with more than 100 other District 6990 Rotarians from around South Florida recently gathered at 94thAero Squadron for a fun networking event. On hand to greet the crowd was District Governor Joe Roth, as well as several presidents-elect just back from training, including Greg Martini, from the Gables Club and Dar Airan who has accepted the position of Club President for the revival of the club that meets at 94th Aero Squadron weekly. Airan encouraged everyone to do makeups while building a club membership base (Tuesday night at Carino’s in Doral is another great make-up option). The President of the Doral Club, First Bank’s Iliana Carbajal,is doing a great job growing the club and bringing in good speakers. Iliana is also the Ambassador Chair for the Doral Business Council — busy women, indeed.
In other Rotary related news, the Rotaract Club at Florida International University has a program aimed at children and coordinated by Andrea Viejo whose Rotaract Club is organizing a “Board Game Bonanza” by gathering games for Miami Children’s Hospital with a goal to collect and donate 300 games.If anyone has board games that are not in use or has a contact for unused games from toy stores or local businesses, please call Andrea at 305-608-1771.
On our fresh food scene locally, Sunday is always a great day to visit Doral’s Farmers Market where you can visit with neighbors,buy herbs and fresh organic veggies and fruits, taste an assortment of culturally-diverse food and even shop for plants and unique gift items, mostly all handmade. An especially interesting new landscaping addition at the market site on N.W.97Ave.at N.W. 41 St.: several‘mini’urban-styled gardens that beautify green areas in the parking lot. Danny Kaskel and his volunteers have done a great job bringing this weekly market to our area and are to be congratulated for offering Doral residents and visitors a fun place to meet neighbors, make new friends and learn about everything from plants to soap making and more.
