On March 7, 2025, School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso participated in a groundbreaking ceremony at West Lakes Preparatory Academy, marking the commencement of the final phase of a $34.5 million renovation project. This phase will include significant upgrades to enhance the campus and improve the learning environment for students.

Board Member Alonso shared his excitement for the project, stating, “This renovation is a major investment in our students’ futures. It will create dedicated spaces for middle school students and elevate the overall learning experience.”

The renovation includes remodeling one of the school’s buildings into 12 middle school classrooms and labs, featuring new finishes, flooring, ceilings, and energy-efficient LED light fixtures. This will provide middle school students with their own building, complete with classrooms, a science lab, and a cafeteria, separate from the younger students. In addition, another building will be remodeled to house a new kitchen, dining area, and service area.

The project also includes the addition of a new stage with lighting and a sound system for the cafetorium, along with a campus-wide public address system to enhance communication throughout the school. Physical education facilities will also see upgrades, with the locker rooms being renovated to include new LED lighting, ceilings, and plumbing fixtures. Furthermore, the elementary school basketball courts will be resurfaced and restriped to improve the athletic facilities.

Alonso emphasized the value of these upgrades, explaining that the renovations will provide middle school students with a more focused, age-appropriate educational experience. “These improvements will foster a more structured learning environment and ensure students have the space and resources they need to thrive,” he said.

“The School Board is committed to creating dynamic, high-quality spaces that enhance learning, encourage collaboration, and promote the overall well-being of our students. As the District 4 representative on the School Board, I am proud to be part of this initiative, which will benefit students for years to come,” added Alonso.

The renovation project is expected to be completed by August 2026. It is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to provide every student with the resources and spaces they need to succeed. These efforts are made possible through community support and funding from the 2012 voter-approved General Obligation Bond, which has played a crucial role in modernizing school facilities and supporting vital construction projects across the district.
