Miami Christian School students shine in academics and athletics

Miami Christian School (MCS) students continue to outperform in academics and athletics. In fact, Class of 2017 graduate Zhukhun Wang not only scored a perfect Math score on the SAT Test, he also got a perfect score on the Physics Advanced Placement Exam.

Another stand out is MCS Sophomore Alejandro Rosario, who was chosen from a handful of athletes across the US to be a pitcher on the TEAM USA Baseball team. Rosario represented the US in games in Cartegena, Colombia, where the team came in first place and received a gold medal.

Over the summer more scholarship offers were received. Senior Josh Rosario signed with the University of Maryland, Baltimore for a full Basketball Scholarship in the Fall. Senior Luis Rodriguez was given a baseball scholarship to Mineral Area College in Park Hills, MO and Senior Nelson Porras was given a baseball scholarship to Barry University.

The Florida State High School Athletic Association awards schools and programs who are the “winningest” in their division. These are the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards. Points are assessed for placement in State competition with points being given for winning State, Regionals, Districts, etc., and points are deducted if there have been unsportsmanlike acts. Miami Christian School was most honored to win two Fred E. Lay Awards this year – one for the Boys’ Sports and one for the Overall – both Boys and Girls Sports.

Finally, classes have begun and Miami Christian School kicked off the MCS kicked off the school year with a Back to School Bash on Aug. 22, on the campus from noon to 5 p.m. Students were excited to return, meet old friends and new students, see their teachers, purchase uniforms, pick up their schedules, and enjoy socializing while partaking in lots of good offerings from the food trucks.

OrthoNow also provided the required health exams for students who needed them. Student athletes hit the field and court running with fall schedule of games from the new football program to volleyball while also juggling music concerts and more. MCS students are among the most well rounded you will find anywhere.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
