Two Doral Students Win Photo Awards

A Doral student who submitted an outstanding portfolio of photographs was declared the top winner in a Junior Orange Bowl Committee/Pitman Photo Supply photography contest on Mar. 30 at Coral Gables Museum.

Amanda Mastrapa, a student at Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment, won “Best Portfolio” given annually to a photographer who demonstrates the most coherent style among photographs in each category.

Emily Gonzalez, also a student at the Doral school, received second place awards for her black-and-white photography and nighttime photography.

Work of 13 student photographers was recognized during an awards ceremony that singled out the best winning photos from over 450 entries in four categories: black & white, nighttime, patterns, zoo animals plus a middle school division.

Mastrapa also finished first in the black & white and nighttime divisons. Daniel Dylan Alvarez, Coral Reef High School, won first in the patterns category; Aidon Milligan, Arthur & Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, first in the ZooMiami Photos; and Gianna Ohms- Rosell, South Miami K-8 Center. first among middle school entries.

The judges, recognized experts in the art of photography, included ZooMiami’s Ron Magill; Daniel De Azoulay, professional photographer and gallery owner; award-winning photographer and art buyer Kay Levine; Miami Herald staff photographer Al Diaz; Dr. Randall Groh, a dentist who is known for his scenic and wildlife photography. Dr. Groh also was chairperson of the event. Certificates were awarded to all first, second and third place winners.
