Westend on 87th Shopping Center, a mixed-use retail destination in the heart of Doral, continued its support of the No Place for Hate program at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, recognizing 10 students as role models and anti-bullying champions. The recent No Place for Hate celebration took place during May which is recognized nationally as Mental Health Awareness Month.
The 10 students, who were nominated by their teachers for the special recognition, include: Michael Molina, Sammy Barjun, Brenda Mijares, Elizabeth Alvarado, Drew Wallace, Sophia Jimenez, Camila Mendez, Juan Riofrio, Tomas Rozenszein, Valentina Bracho. Each received a $25 Amazon gift card and school supplies courtesy of Westend for their roles in making their school a No Place for Hate learning environment where every student can feel safe and valued.
Initiated by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), No Place for Hate is an award-winning national program that encourages students, administrators, teachers, and family members to work collaboratively to develop an inclusive school climate. The program puts students in the driver’s seat to build a movement towards positive change and rewards them for proactively addressing bias and bullying incidents.
No Place for Hate aligns with Miami-Dade Public Schools Values Matter Miami initiative, which highlights the importance of demonstrating behaviors that align with the district’s core values such as respect, fairness, kindness, and integrity. The two initiatives are often utilized interchangeably.
“No Place for Hate role models are rewarded for fostering a prejudice-free school and promoting intergroup harmony,” said Mayte Sotomayor, Trust Counselor at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School. “We take pride in celebrating Values Matter Miami through our No Place for Hate campaign, which encourages students to treat others with respect and kindness, demonstrating strong values. We are grateful for the support of businesses like Westend on 87 that allows us to recognize these students for their actions to promote a school community that is free of conflict and discrimination.”
“At Westend on 87, we are passionate about supporting the wellness of our community and are proud to take part in recognizing this group of extraordinary young people for their leadership in making their school a positive place for their peers,” said Silvia J Fernandez, Westend’s Managing Director.
Proudly, Westend on 87th has served the Doral community for more than 20 years and enjoys giving back. The shopping center regularly hosts events free and open to the community in its open-air courtyard, including Fall Festival and Well at Westend – a holistic wellness series in partnership with the City of Doral that offers complimentary health and wellness classes monthly. “As children and families deal with increasing levels of stress and pressure, taking time to support others demonstrates a great deal of leadership and compassion,” added Fernandez. “We are grateful to Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School for providing us the opportunity to recognize these students, and to the teachers and staff for making the Doral community so special.”
