On December 12, 2013, young musicians and dancers from Conchita Espinosa Academy and Conservatory of the Arts will do their part to bring joy to the elderly during the holiday season by visiting Pasteur Clinics for a holiday concert on December 12, 2013. Performers will include the school’s Music Makers, as well as Conservatory voice students and jazz ensemble.
Music Makers
CEA is unique in offering elementary and middle school children the opportunity to choose an area of interest and develop a passion at an early age. Music Makers are a part of Conchita Espinosa Academy’s (CEA) Mastery Program. The Mastery Program provides a unique opportunity for elementary and middle school students to dedicate themselves to an area of passion. The program gives students the opportunity to grow in their passion and become leaders through the guidance of professionals who share the same passion. Mastery teachers and students are in a continual process of growth and discovery. The Mastery Program creates a space of inspiration and discovery, and both teachers and students alike are challenged to dream, do, and create. Grades 3-5 meet twice a week in multi-age groups, where they cultivate these individual and unique gifts through dedicated programs such as Music Makers, Dance Ensemble, choir, art, cooking, gardening, and LegoRobotics, among others. In grades 6-8, students make a three-year commitment to an area of interest, talent, and ability. Some of the Mastery programs are are Senior Dance Ensemble, Music Makers, public relations, where students create a weekly blog, Conchita Magazine, a completely student-run publication, cross-country/track and field, service groups, and S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), among others. These Mastery groups are intensive and meet daily, allowing students to ignite passion, pursue aspirations, and develop proficiency in the chosen area of focus.
Giving Back to the Community
Civics and Life Cue are two of the many Mastery programs CEA offers. They are dedicated to organizing service activities and are responsible for creating awareness of local, national, and world community needs in the school. One project they completed in 2013 was the Neighbors 4 Neighbors Halloween Costume Drive. Together, students in third through fifth grades were able to collect over 250 costumes for underprivileged children in the South Florida Community. Other projects in fall 2013 are Life Cue’s Thanksgiving food drive and the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes, where the children collect cards between October and early December and distribute them at military installations, veterans’ hospitals, and other locations. The students in these groups also work in collaboration with the rest of the school to support CEA’s sister school in Haiti through a program called Amor en Acción. In addition to the service oriented groups, Conchita Espinosa Academy encourages all students to give back to their communities. In fall 2013, the dance mastery raised over $4,500 in the Walk for Parkinson’s disease. Art students display their pieces at the Baptist Radiation Oncology Center in order to share their talent, dreams, and passion with the patients; and choir and dance students will perform in Kendall Regional Hospital’s Winter Wonderland Extravaganza on December 6, 2013.
