About Storytime
“Storytime, The Podcast” is Bookleggers Library’s latest endeavor. Its premise follows Miami-based artists back to their homeland, on a hunt for books, libraries, art, and the everyday beauty of home. Each season follows an artist as they rediscover their roots, tell the stories of their country of origin – and chat with fellow artists and thinkers there, also asking them to read from their favorite works of literature.
Season 1, hosted by Miami-based Peruvian artist and musician Juan Ledesma – also Bookleggers Library’s program manager – takes listeners on a journey across continents as Ledesma travels back to his native Lima, Peru to interview artists and poets about their experiences, inspirations, and the vibrant cultural tapestry there.
The first season of “Storytime, the Podcast” offers a unique perspective on the Peruvian art scene by delving deep into the lives and works of artists and poets living and creating in and around Lima. Through intimate conversations and thought-provoking discussions, listeners will gain insight into the rich cultural heritage, diverse artistic expressions, and unique narratives that shape Peru’s artistic landscape.
Juan Ledesma, the host of “Storytime, the Podcast,” commented on the podcast’s mission, stating, “I am thrilled to be the first host of ‘Storytime, the Podcast,’ and to share the stories of talented artists and poets from my beloved Peru with a global audience. Through these conversations, we aim to foster connections, inspire creativity, and celebrate the beauty of Peruvian art and culture.”
Each of the six episodes of “Storytime the Podcast” Season 1 will feature in-depth interviews with prominent and emerging artists and poets from various regions of Peru. As Ledesma meets and exchanges ideas with filmmakers Gonzalo Benavente Secco and Gecia Barbieri, artist and publisher Andres Marroquin, journalist Javier Masias, and former Minister of Culture of Peru and Grammy Award-winning artist Susana Baca, listeners experience an immersive, diverse range of voices and perspectives, reflecting the richness and dynamism of Peru’s artistic community.
Listeners can expect to explore themes such as identity, tradition, innovation, and the universal language of art through engaging conversations and firsthand accounts. Whether discussing the influence of Peru’s landscapes on artistic inspiration or reflecting on the socio-political context of contemporary Peruvian art, “Storytime the Podcast” offers a multifaceted exploration of creativity in its purest form.
“Storytime the Podcast” builds upon “Storytime for Grown-Ups,” an Instagram-based series Bookleggers launched in 2020 to keep followers connected to live arts and culture through vignettes featuring Miami creatives reading their favorite stories, poems, or essays. “Storytime for Grown-Ups” produced nine seasons and more than 60 episodes garnering over 20,000 views during its two-year run.
“Storytime the Podcast” Season 1 will be available on all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts, starting March 28, 2024. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast to receive updates on new episodes and exclusive content.
