In Haiti, at a time of cholera and gangs, young artists chose dance, music, and theater to resist. Born after the Duvaliers’ dictatorship, they have lived through 19 presidents, 36 prime ministers, eight coups d’état, three foreign military interventions, and two major earthquakes. Since the assassination of the president in 2021, the country has been abandoned to the criminal gangs that terrorize the population. Nevertheless, the artists are ready to brave any danger to get on stage. They all gravitate around a unique space in Haiti and the Caribbean: the Festival Quatre Chemins held in Port-au-Prince every year, whatever the cost. In a verdant urban lakou with a flowing river, theater comes to life for ten days.

Genre: Music Documentary
Lovers rock music, often dubbed “romantic reggae”, is a uniquely Black British sound that developed in the late 1970s and 80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension, and sound systems. The music allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing at parties and clubs and provided a coping mechanism for what was happening on the streets. The genre would find mainstream success, with acts such as UB40, Maxi Priest, and Culture Club bringing this unique sound to the world. It also influenced a new generation of Jamaican reggae musicians, including Freddie McGregor and Gregory Isaacs.“The Story of Lovers Rock” is an uplifting, body-shaking documentary tribute to this music genre. Featuring live performances by some of lovers rock’s pioneers, as well as comedy sketches, interviews, dramatic recreations, and archival footage, this film is a wonderfully nostalgic look back at the music and the generation that embraced it.

Mayito is a young boy whose wealthy jazz pianist father showers him with the latest PlayStation games. Accustomed to being driven to school with a TV in the car, he is the epitome of the successful student who does everything proper and usually receives whatever he wants. When he gets lost during the May Day Celebration in Revolution Square, he finds himself in a poorer neighborhood outside Havana, where a fellow schoolmate, Carlos, lives. At first uncomfortable in the strange settings, he soon discovers the simple joys that Carlos and his friends experience without the latest electronic games and TV shows.
This community film series and celebration is made possible with generous support by The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation.
