Nerissa Street was a teacher with a problem.
“I was running a workshop that teaches small business owners how to get funding to launch and expand community impact projects,” she explains. “And I had to compete with cat memes.”
What Street contended with is an issue that many small business owners face. Marketing in the onslaught of social media content. The difference? “The workshop isn’t for some product in inventory. The people who need it will do something positive for our community. If the right audience doesn’t see this, someone will suffer.”
Enter La Guardia Cross. The viral creator had grown his online impact to 1 million subscribers and followers, and appeared on Good Morning America and the Rachael Ray show. His content, New Father Chronicles, was based on his journey as a new Black dad. Now, his girls have grown up and he was at a crossroads with his content. Cross and Street had worked together before he launched his YouTube channel – and he credits Street for giving him the idea to launch the channel.
Nerissa had a proposal. She was also a grant writer who had created innovative programming for television, theater and film. She had over 15,000 hours of public speaking experience including a TED talk and appearances on PBS and NBC6. Why not work with La Guardia to teach a workshop to give people doing good in the world a more powerful platform?
Together, they have created a workshop titled Improve My Influence: Making a Living with Storytelling for Good. “We’re so passionate about our causes that we tend to rant,” says Cross. “That doesn’t work well with the algorithms.” Cross jokes that he’s failed enough to have relevant lessons, and Street agrees.
“Most people think experts need to have a ton of knowledge,” Street quips. “My best classroom visits have been with professionals who are willing to be honest about the ups and downs in their profession, and who have a sense of humor.”
La Guardia Cross brings all of that to the table. His quirky brand of family entertainment keeps his “online aunties” fully engaged and ready to act, which is what mission-driven professionals need to really help their cause. He’s also been very transparent about his family’s struggles, his wife’s mental health journey, and somehow manages to keep it all funny.
“This is a crucial year for the world, as close to half the global population will be voting,” says Street. “Storytelling for good is more important than ever. Culture makers, really artists, are already creating good content. I want us to finally benefit from the value that we give to our community. ”
This is the first in a series of skill-based workshops called “Redefining Good” where Street partners with proven experts to give mission-driven professionals a toolkit to increase their positive impact in South Florida. “Improve My Influence” is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 from 1PM – 5 PM ET, and will be online (for global access).
