The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI)—a leader in disease prevention & early detection— returns with its 7th Annual Pink Walk—5K Run and Walk hosted by Miami Dade College-North Campus. Leading into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WBHI’s Pink Walk 2023 will be held the morning of Sunday, September 24th inviting the community and their families to run or walk, while raising funds for grassroots educational programs on disease prevention and local resources for early detection of breast cancer.
The event culminates the inaugural Miami Dade College Changemaker Week aligning with good health and well-being, one of the Sustainable Development Goals from the United Nations.
“We are thrilled with the momentum our Pink Walk has built in South Florida to bring local resources that help beat the odds of both breast cancer and heart disease in our community,” states Andrea Ivory, WBHI’s founder and executive director. “Our mission of disease prevention and early detection is critical to outcomes and we are so grateful to our partners and supporters for joining us to realize a better tomorrow. It is so refreshing to see individuals, families with young children, even pets, come out for this important issue while maintaining healthy habits themselves.”
Each year, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 43,000 die. Despite remarkable advances in treatment and early detection, breast cancer remains one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among American women, and it remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.
The Pink Walk registration is $35.00, and participants receive a t-shirt and finisher medal. Runners and walkers are also empowered to play an active role in helping to transform and save lives by setting up a personal fundraising page. Special swag will be awarded when participants raise $50, $100, $250, $500, and more, helping WBHI get to its $100,000 goal. Proceeds will benefit the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative for its grassroots community services including early detection, health education, care coordination and patient navigation.
The morning event begins with registration at 6:00 a.m., opening ceremony at 7:00 a.m., and run/walk kickoff at 7:30 a.m. The WBHI Pink Walk will feature live entertainment and DJ, sponsor samplings including Macy’s, Starbucks, Misha’s Cupcakes, and more.
The 7th Annual WBHI Pink Walk is made possible thanks to generous supporters including host partner Miami Dade College, presenting sponsor Jackson Health System; platinum sponsor Assurant; and additional sponsors Genentech, The Fountain, AstraZeneca, Florida Power & Light, Ivey Design Build, Colodny Fass, Invision Diagnostics, among others.
On-site participants of WBHI Pink Walk will have special access to order a pre-sale voucher, with just their vehicle tag number on-hand, for the beautifully designed WBHI designated license plate that supports Disease Prevention & Early Detection, flbreasthealth.com/license-plate. Upon production, the specialty license plate will provide increased education and awareness relating to early detection, prevention, and screening of breast and heart issues.
Supporters of WBHI’s 7th Annual Pink Walk can also participate virtually outdoors in the 5K Run and Walk around their neighborhood, or at the park, beach, or other convenient outdoor location. All are invited to spread the word among friends, family, and the community at large, while challenging three other people to join in.
