As Proposed by the Honorable School Board Chair and District 6 Representative, Mari Tere Rojas, the School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida.
At the School Board Meeting of May 14, 2025, School Board Chair and District 6 Representative Mari Tere Rojas proffered agenda item H-9, directing the Superintendent of Schools to provide an update regarding the concept of establishing a comprehensive school choice concept of Districtwide Centers for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) in District-owned facilities with available space; to further provide additional information regarding the concepts described in the two staff follow-ups provided by the Superintendent at the time; and submit a report to the Board by June 16, 2025.
On May 24, 2017, the School Board approved Agenda Item H-16, proffered by Board Member Mari Tere Rojas and co-sponsored by other Members of the Board, directing the Superintendent to: (1) assess the feasibility of establishing Districtwide Centers for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) as a school choice option; (2) determine whether implementation could occur within existing resources or if additional funding would be required; and (3) report findings to the Board by October 11, 2017.
A staff follow-up was provided to the Board in September 2017. In August 2018, in response to further questions from Board Member Rojas, a second follow-up with more detailed information was provided.
At the core of Agenda Item H-16 was the proposal to establish a school choice model of Districtwide Centers for ASD. This model aims to ensure equitable access to autism-specific services and professionals across all schools, promote consistency in care, and fulfill IDEA requirements. It would also strengthen support for families and staff, while enabling the district to more effectively monitor outcomes through data-driven evaluations.
The Board is encouraged to revisit this initiative and request an updated report. Establishing dedicated ASD centers would reaffirm the district’s commitment to inclusive, evidence-based education and could serve as a replicable model for other school districts.
