The Village of Palmetto Bay and ArtSouth will host the work of local artist Mari Vizquerra at Perrine Community House on Saturday, May 20, as part of their ongoing program of showcasing area artists. The title of the exhibition is “Layers of My Life, inspired by the moment.”

The opening art reception runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Perrine Community House is located at 900 Perrine Ave. in Palmetto Bay.

Vizquerra was born in Peru and spent her childhood in rural countryside areas. She has lived in the Miami area for almost 30 years.

“Nature has been my lifelong companion,” Vizquerra said. “I knew from a young age that I wanted to have a career that would challenge my creative spirit.”

Vizquerra spent 30 years working as a successful graphic designer before she decided to pursue a new journey in fine art. She knew she wanted to be a graphic designer by the time she was 12 years old. Following the completion of her bachelor’s degree at Instituto Montemar she moved to the United States for her master’s in graphic design at the Art Institute of Miami and went on to start her own successful company, formerly known as Giupa Creative Group. Her fine art style is quite different.

“Most all my artworks are mixed media,” Vizquerra said. “I use wood, string, acrylic paint, pastel, burlap, cardboard, all different, whatever I think of at the moment. Some look like 3-D, some are 2-D.”

She said that her paintings are very intuitive and created with emotion. She loved to paint from the age of 12 and is self-taught. This exhibition will nearly 30 paintings on display, some large, some small. She has chosen things that are colorful and interesting.

Already this year she has exhibited in Milan, Italy and in Madrid, Spain.

When asked about inspiration she said that the paintings create themselves. Every shape and color inspire the next.

In her artist’s statement she says, “In this collection of artworks I want you to feel the transformation of what those moments felt like for me. But most importantly, I want you to allow these artworks to speak to you and evoke your own emotions. Art should be unique to each of us.”
