ArtSouth and The Village of Palmetto Bay are continuing their partnership in presenting exhibitions of the work of local artists at Perrine Community House.
The next opening event, for artist Jesus “Ink” Marquez, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and children are welcome.
Marquez, a Cuban American artist born and raised in Miami, draws his inspiration from nature and a number of different artistic styles.
“It is a collaboration of many forms of art, which I have grown to love throughout my life,” Marquez said. “This includes styles such as cartooning, street art, surrealism, tattoo art, abstract art, anime, impressionism and doodling.”
The media he most often uses are acrylics, oils, markers, spray-paint, and color pencils. His canvasses are usually large.
He began creating art at an early age.
“I was self taught for most of my life,” he said. “I did receive art education in college where I received my associates in art. But it all started as a child with a pen and paper trying to express my imagination.”
He thinks the venue of Perrine Community House, which was refurbished several years ago, is ideal for exhibitions.
“The Community House is very spacious, allowing for a large variety of artwork to be showcased. The multiple rooms also allow an artist to play around with the layout of their exhibition.”
Marquez is appreciative of the opportunity and the support for art.
“I think what Art South and the village are doing for local artists is phenomenal,” he said.
“It allows upcoming, unknown artists to showcase their work in ways that are sometimes inaccessible. It’s also a great way to bring a community together and expose them to a range of art styles not commonly seen.”
Having his work seen is important to him, perhaps for unexpected reasons.
“I have always wanted people to view my art, not for its monetary value, but for its ability to create thought and a distraction from the struggles of everyday life. And, if only for a minute, they are able to forget about their problems while experiencing my art then my job as an artist I would consider successful.”
