ArtSouth and the Village of Palmetto Bay teamed again for the final exhibition of the current season by showcasing the work of two area artists, Rossana Montoya and Laurie Shapero, on Saturday, May 11. As before, the event took place at Perrine Community House in Palmetto Bay from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Rossana Montoya, born in Lima, Peru, studied at the School of Fine Arts and Design in Peru from 1985 to 1990 and emigrated to the United States in the 1990s. She received a degree in painting from Florida International University in 2000 and in 2010 earned a master’s degree in art education. She currently teaches art and works in her studio in Miami.
Laurie Shapero is an emerging artist who explores the interplay of light, color and emotion.
She began painting during the pandemic as a way to pass the time, but during the past four years her passion for art has grown and she has continued to create more of her abstract works, landscapes and other subjects.
Montoya, whose paintings on canvas and watercolors were on display, was pleased with the well-attended exhibit.
“The event was great,” she said. “A lot of people showed up and we really enjoyed it.”
Shapero also greatly liked the Perrine Community House event.
“The building is beautiful,” Shapero said. “Everybody commented on that they love the building. I think the location is a little difficult for people, maybe if they’re not from the South Dade community and people don’t know it’s right there in their backyard. I want to thank ArtSouth and Palmetto Bay for giving us a chance to showcase our work that way.”
Shapero has an event coming up in June in Hollywood at the Arris Art Gallery.
The ArtSouth and Village exhibitions will be on hiatus during the summer months and will resume in September.
