As part of its ongoing program to showcase local artists, ArtSouth and the Village of Palmetto Bay will host an opening art reception featuring the work of Puchi Noriega on Saturday, Apr. 15, at Perrine Community House in Palmetto Bay. The reception is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

An international artist born in Peru, Noriega became interested in artwork at age 3 in her family’s ceramic studio. She has received several awards for her work, including grants from the Canada Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council. She has taught art classes and workshops at art schools as well as institutions in Peru, Canada, Costa Rica and the United States.

Noriega was elected president of the Ceramic League of Miami, a well-recognized art organization in Florida. She has participated in more than 70 group and individual exhibitions and her work is in many private and public collections. Noriega resides in Miami where she continues her work at her home studio.

The event on Apr. 15 will be her second time in an exhibition at Perrine Community House. Her first was in 2019. This time there is a difference to her paintings.

“I am grateful to be invited back to share a retrospective of my work,” Noriega said. “This exhibit commemorates 60 years of my relationship with clay as well as a collection of paintings I have created. My last exhibit focused on my journey dealing with cancer. Now I am cured and my paintings are filled with color and excitement about another day.”

Janis Klein-Cohen, board chair of ArtSouth, is pleased to see Noriega return.

“It’s terrific to have the opportunity to showcase Puchi’s current body of artwork after four years,” Klein-Cohen said. “As with most artists, given time, she has evolved in her expressions on canvas.”

In addition to doing her painting and ceramic work, Noriega plans to continue teaching. Art is her life.

“This summer I will be hosting weekly workshops for adults and teens wanting to explore and/or work on their creative skills,” she said. “I don’t remember ever wanting to be anything other than an artist.”

Perrine Community House is located at 900 Perrine Ave., Palmetto Bay, FL 33157. For information about ArtSouth contact info@artsouthmiami.org or call 305-964-5662.
