ArtSouth and the Village of Palmetto Bay are joining again for an exhibition of local art at Perrine Community House on Saturday, Feb. 10. The artist featured this month is Andrea Clement who will have examples of her photo encaustic work of Florida’s environment and wildlife on display.

“I am thrilled to have an exhibit with ArtSouth at the Perrine Community Center — especially since this is my very first solo photo encaustic exhibit,” Clement said. “As an emerging artist, they have granted me an opportunity that is not easy for all artists to come by in Miami as it can be very competitive. ArtSouth deemed my work worthy of an exhibit based on the artwork and did not factor in a tally of past exhibits.

“I believe that as a team, the Village of Palmetto Bay and ArtSouth are trailblazers in this area of Miami where there simply isn’t much opportunity to go see or exhibit art. Not only that, the Perrine Community House is a charming historic building built in 1935 that is simply a beautiful location for art exhibits,” she said.

Combining the ancient art of encaustics (hot wax painting) with photography, Clement blurs the line between photography and painting. A Miami-based artist, Clement creates distinctive photo encaustic artwork focused on Florida’s environment and animals. Holding degrees in both Professional Photography and Art History, Clement’s career spans work for museums, archeological societies, art dealers, and creating and selling her artwork.

Since 2018, Clement’s primary focus has been the combination of her nature photographs with encaustics, a style which she is passionate about and that she wants to share with others. Andrea has created and offers photo encaustic workshops.

“What I like most about working with encaustics is the multifarious ways in which one can work with it,” Clement said. “Encaustic medium is a mixture of beeswax and damar resin. It is painted upon a surface in molten form, either in its clear state or it can be pigmented and made into encaustic paint. The encaustic piece is created by building up layers of wax.

It’s a receptive medium that accepts oil paint, ink loose pigment, it can be scratched into, scraped back to reveal lower layers, photographs can be embedded into it or transferred onto it. It’s versatility simply allows the creativity of the artist to run wild.”
