Miami-Dade County Commission vice chair Audrey M. Edmonson was chosen unanimously to lead the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners as its chair for the next two years during the board’s Dec. 4 meeting. Edmonson nominated District 6 Commissioner Rebeca Sosa to serve was vice chair, and she also was unanimously approved.
Their two-year terms as chair and vice chair will begin in January. Edmonson, who has held the position of vice chair of the commission for the past two years, has served on the commission since December 2005.
“Thank you for your vote of confidence,” Edmonson told her colleagues. “I will continue our efforts for better modes of transportation through our Smart Plan. I will continue the fight to eradicate crime and put an end to senseless gun violence that is wreaking havoc on our urban core. I will continue to work with you, my colleagues, to not only study, but to implement strategies and efforts in addressing resiliency and climate change.”
She said she would continue to work with other commissioners to create living spaces that are affordable for low income and workforce residents and will continue efforts to redevelop aging public housing into places that constituents can be proud to call home.
“I know we will achieve this with the help of the mayor, the county attorney, the department directors and all the county employees who work hard every day,” Edmonson said. “Denzel Washington once said: ‘You pray for rain, you got to deal with the mud too. That’s part of it.’ And God knows we get muddy! Thank you for your willingness to get muddy with me. There is always much to do and Miami-Dade County is waiting on us to do it.”
