Good Morning America (GMA) on Friday, July 29, featured the top four competitors in the network show’s “Ultimate Burger Spot” after four rounds of GMA’s United States of Burgers contest across the country.

Palmetto Bay’s own Babe’s Meat & Counter, a butcher shop and sandwich counter owned and operated by Jason and Melanie Schoendorfer, was among the top four.

“It was wild,” said Jason Schoendorfer on the Monday following the show after he and his wife returned from New York. “It was a roller coaster…Wednesday, Thursday, then sitting in the green room at GMA on Friday morning, getting ready to go on the air. It was pretty much a whirlwind.”

They had been approached earlier by a producer at GMA and invited to participate in the Miami level of the competition which was done at one of the local hotels.

“They were doing it in four cities, Miami, Atlanta, Houston and Philadelphia,” Schoendorfer said. “We were fortunate enough to win in Miami on Wednesday.”

The Schoendorfers began focusing on producing premium meat products and other delicacies back in 2013 at the Pinecrest Farmer’s Market, then opened Babe’s Meat & Counter in 2018. It has been a popular eatery and marketplace since then.

Babe’s Meat & Counter is located at 9216 SW 156 St. in Palmetto Bay. Their website is www.babefroman.com and orders can be placed by calling 786-429-1315.

Houston’s hip hop legend Bun B’s Trill OG Burger was picked by the show’s judges for the top spot, but Jason Schoendorfer was still happy to have participated.

“It was a great opportunity,” he said.
