Band teacher wins Grammy 2026 Music Educator Award
Jennifer Jimenez, South Miami Senior High School Band director, is winner of the 2026 Music Educator Award.

South Miami Senior High School Band director Jennifer Jimenez has won a Grammy and was recognized with the 2026 Music Educator Award, chosen among the 10 finalists vying for the award and winning a selection process that began months ago with over 2,000 initial nominations from 50 states.

“I’m extremely humbled to represent music educators across the country who work tirelessly every day,” Jimenez said. “I am grateful for the light this recognition shines on our extraordinary school.”

Jimenez was recognized recently for her transformative impact on students and her many years of dedication to the South Miami community. In addition to the award, Jimenez received a $10,000 honorarium and a matching $10,000 grant for the South Miami Senior High School music program.

Jimenez, who currently is in her 19th year as band director at South Miami Senior High School, is a Kennedy Center Sondheim Inspirational Teaching Award winner and a previous

Grammy Music Educator Award Finalist.
Boosting her students’ confidence and abilities to thrive not just in band class but in life, Jimenez’s philosophy has produced remarkable results. Under her leadership, the Cobra Band program has flourished, with her high standards culminating in student performances at Carnegie Hall and two Super Bowls.

Her journey to the top was further elevated by an impressive showing of M-DCPS talent, with five quarterfinalists in the initial Grammy selection process.

These distinguished educators include:
Oliver Diez, Palmetto Elementary
Dr. Janet Duguay-Kirsten, Dante B. Fascell Elementary
Cindy Ellis, Miami Arts Studio 6-12 at Zelda Glazer
Jim Gasior, New World School for the Arts
Jennifer Jimenez, South Miami Senior High (Winner)

Her success exemplifies the extraordinary talent and opportunities found across our schools, just one of the many reasons why M-DCPS is your best choice.
