The Barbara Knight Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), announced that it will host its Inaugural Grand Gala on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida. The gala will start with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and will feature silent and live auctions, live entertainment, dinner, dancing and more. Proceeds will benefit the Barbara Knight Foundation.

Barbara Knight, a 52-year-old Boca Raton resident, was diagnosed with AML, the deadliest type of leukemia, in February 2021. Only 25% of patients diagnosed with AML have a five-year survival rate. Barbara, or Barbie as friends and family know her, had already beaten breast cancer three years earlier when she was diagnosed with AML. “I was in complete shock,” said Barbie. “I had never even heard of AML and then to learn that it’s practically a death sentence was almost too much to handle.”

In true Barbie fashion, though, she was determined to fight AML as aggressively as she fought breast cancer while also helping shed a light on this mostly unknown disease. So not long after her diagnosis, she founded the Barbara Knight Foundation.

While in and out of the ER and hospitals, Barbie came to know several AML patients, many of whom lacked the financial resources to get quality care while also keeping up with their household finances. She decided that a priority of the foundation would be to assist these patients with financial grants that could help them pay medical co-pays, utility bills, groceries, or other necessary items.

“At this time, we are giving grants to any AML patient in financial need. All they need to do is apply on our website and provide proof of diagnosis,” said Barbie. “Our team usually sends out a check in a matter of days. It’s a couple of hundred dollars which may not seem much, but if it can pay a babysitter or a phone bill or just take some burdens off these patients so they can focus on fighting this disease, then we’ve accomplished what we’ve set out to do.”

The Barbara Knight Foundation strives to promote awareness of AML, assist patients in financial need, and also raise awareness of the need for bone marrow donors. For more information about the Inaugural Grand Gala or the AML financial assistance fund, please visit https://www.barbaraknight.org/
