‘Battle of the Buns’ draws more than 800 attendees

The Village of Palmetto Bay’s new event, “Battle of the Buns,” had more than 800 people in attendance at Coral Reef Park on Saturday, Apr. 5.

Backyard chefs and restaurant pros competed for the title of “Best Burger in Palmetto Bay.”

Top performers were awarded cash prizes, special signs to boast about their new title, and a trophy.

Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham served as a judge in the burger contest, along with Mitch Panter from Panter Panter and Sampedro, a top sponsor of the event, and Jason Schoendorfer, owner of Babe’s Meat and Counter. The judges tasted and scored each burger.

“We’re always looking for new ways to showcase the talents of our residents and businesses and this event did just that,” Mayor Cunningham said.

Jennifer Zika, Special Events and Programs coordinator, who handled the new event, released the results of the competition.

“The winners of the Bun-der-dog amateur category were The Juicy Palms, comprised of team members Russell Jones, Jose Somoza, Randy Jones, and Brent Brown,” Zika said.

“The Top Bun award for the best professional burger went to D’s Dry Age Burgers.”

The Mr. Nice Guy Band provided live music for the event, playing classic rock tunes.

“This inaugural event was a huge success and we will be bringing it back even bigger and better next year” said Fanny Carmona, Parks and Recreation director. “We are thrilled to introduce a new event that brings the community together while also utilizing the amenities of our beautiful parks.”

Sponsors of the event included Baptist Health, Nicklaus Children’s Palmetto Bay Outpatient and Urgent Care Center, Audi Miami South by The Collection, Panter Panter and Sampedro, SouthState Bank and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – St. Richard Church.
