Some 350-plus Tropical Audubon Society members and friends perched with the birds on the final weekend of April to celebrate Mother Earth at the 2.2-acre, wooded Steinberg Nature Center that serves as the environmental organization’s green campus.

A captivating playbill of generous-spirited musicians headlined Birdstock on Saturday, Apr. 27 — Acoustic Anarchy, solo singer-songwriters LEVI and Danny Rein, and Scott Katz & Company — all of whom lent their formidable talents to the society’s ongoing conservation and restoration efforts.

The following afternoon, Sunday, Apr. 28, Zoo Miami Goodwill Ambassador Ron Magill delivered a rousing keynote speech at the society’s annual Members Migration meeting, hosted by TAS president José Francisco Barros and sponsored by Leica Store Miami.

His inspiring speech focused on preserving Miami Pine Rocklands and critical wildlife habitat, citing the crucial roles played by Tropical Audubon Society members and staff, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and MDC commissioners in advocating to protect Globally Critically Endangered Pine Rocklands and the endangered species that rely on it to survive.

He underscored his point by telling the 150-plis attendees, “Most of all thank you. It’s grassroots people like yourselves who are able to change the world.”

Next, three South Florida conservation heroes were honored in an awards ceremony that recognized them for the extraordinary efforts they made to protect and preserve area wildlife, critical habitat and/or our region’s natural resources.

    • The Polly Redford Citizen Conservation Award was presented to Sandy Moise by TAS senior conservation director Lauren Jonaitis.

    • The Tropical Audubon Society Board Appreciation Award was presented to singer/songwriter Grant Livingston by TAS Education & Advocacy Director Stephanie Clements.

TAS members in attendance also voted in four new board members: Michael Aronsohn, Miriam Avello and David Marshall and Teri Marshall.

Attendees of the meaningful afternoon were treated to a concert by folk artist/awardee Grant Livingston, Sports Grill sliders, Doc Tonic Punch, a Bird Walk and a lively Silent Auction.

Hospitality sponsor Republic National Distributing Company graciously stocked the society’s signature donation Bird Bar to overflowing for both Birdstock and Members Migration.

Net proceeds from the jam-packed weekend will help protect our region’s precious wildlife, their habitats and South Florida’s crucial water resources.
