On May 4, 2021, the Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioners Kionne L. McGhee and Jean Monestime that would establish the Safety Neighborhood Emergency Team Pilot Program to address gun violence in Districts 2 and 9.

In 2020, the Miami-Dade Police Department recorded more than 270 homicide cases—an increase from 2019—many of which involved victims under the age of 21 who died from gun violence. County Commission Districts 2 and 9 have both been greatly affected by gun violence over the last several years, with many of the deadliest shootings in Miami-Dade County taking place within their borders.

“Gun Violence has plagued our communities for far too long,” Commissioner McGhee said. “I have made it my top priority to bring the resources that are necessary to educate and help our youth break out of the cycle of the violence that haunts their daily lives.”

With this resolution in effect, the County Mayor can launch the program in determined parameters with funding made available through various resources, including grants.

“This pilot program will be help us combat gun violence in our communities with the funding and resources that we need,” Commissioner Monestime said.
