There are plenty of Miami Hurricane fans who claim to bleed orange and green. But perhaps no UM fan can top the devotion of G. Holmes Braddock. The 96-year-old retired insurance agent and World War II veteran has been attending Canes football games since he was a student at the University of Miami in 1946. He has attended nearly every UM home football game for 75 years. Photo by Al Diaz of the Miami Herald.
But Braddock’s passion for Miami goes beyond sports. He’s been a long advocate of public education. He spent 38 years as a member of the Miami-Dade County School Board and served as chairperson multiple times. Braddock was instrumental in desegregating schools in the 1960s and was a champion for bilingualism, collective bargaining for public employees, the school volunteer program, citizen input into student athletic programs, and the inclusion of a student representative on the School Board. In September 1989, the brand new G. Holmes Braddock High School opened in Southwest Miami-Dade County. Braddock remains active in Miami community. He is among the board of directors for the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
