The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today elevated linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III (No. 57) and cornerback Ryan Smith (No. 33) from the team’s practice squad for tomorrow’s Week 10 game vs. the Seattle Seahawks. It marks the first elevation of the season for both players.
Gilbert III (6-0, 230) originally entered the league as a sixth-round selection (No. 207 overall) of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Steelers prior to being waived on August 19, 2022. In 28 career games played, Gilbert has recorded 21 special teams tackles and four defensive tackles. The Ocala, Florida, native played in every game of his four-year career at the University of Akron, earning first-team All-MAC twice.
Smith (5-11, 189) spent his first five NFL seasons with Tampa Bay (2016-20) after being selected by the Buccaneers as a fourth-round pick (No. 108 overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft. Smith signed with the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2021 offseason and also spent time this season on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad from September 27 to October 25. The veteran defensive back has played in 77 career games, including 17 starts, tallying 100 tackles, 12 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He has also played a significant role on special teams, notching 22 tackles over his career. Smith was born in Augsburg, Germany, approximately 40 miles northwest of Munich. He played collegiately at North Carolina Central.
