Centennial Tea, golf tournament among May’s coming events

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and there still is time to RSVP for Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) Centennial Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, May 13, 1-4 p.m.

This fourth annual tea is always a lavish affair you will not want to miss. Event chair Rita Tennyson promises a spectacular afternoon of food, entertainment, and bubbly with an opportunity to shop for that perfect gift for mom. The club is opening both ballrooms, 1001 and 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd.

One side will provide guests a place to enjoy a “Sip and Shop” with lots of great gift items for purchase and, of course, bubbly. The other side will have entertainment by the UM’s Frost School of Music’s Purslane Trio, food, tea and more bubbly.

This is a perfect way to celebrate with your daughters, moms, friends, and family, and all for a great cause, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Children’s Dental Clinic. This clinic provides well over $200,000 in free dental services annually to children of the working poor.

Tickets are $125 for adults and may be purchased on Eventbrite. To reserve, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/590175680347.

Leading up to Easter, this active Coral Gables Woman’s Club met on Apr. 5 for a general meeting that packed the room decorated for the Easter season. In fact, the Easter Bunny (Corey

Tennyson) also was on hand for some fun photo ops.

In other club news, the GRWC Coco Plum Woman’s Club held it second annual Brunch & Broadway on Apr. 1 to a sold-out crowd raising more than $10,000 that will be directed to the club’s scholarship fund. Guests enjoyed listening to sounds of violinist Ronny Moreno and the FIU School of Music musicians play Broadway tunes.

Kudos to event chairs, Charlene Feldner and Barbara Wexler, and the honorary event chair, Renee Reichling, representing the First National Bank of South Miami.

Yet another upcoming exciting May event is A Safe Haven for Newborns’ (ASHFN) sixth annual Tee Off for a Cause Golf Tournament. Save the date, Friday, May 19, and sign up for this great day at Trump National Doral Resorts Red Tiger Golf Course with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Golfers will enjoy a day on the links followed by a reception, silent auction and great prizes. To register and/or learn more about this amazing organization, visit asafehavenfornewborns.org.

For those not familiar with ASHFN, it was founded 22 years ago by Nick Silverio who works 24/7 at no salary to help mothers and expectant mothers in crisis. Recently, they welcomed the 370th baby that was lawfully left in the arms of caring firefighters at a Florida Fire Station.

Firefighters ensured both mother and the baby were healthy, and mother was offered additional support and resources with her identity protected as the law allows. That healthy baby was delivered to a local hospital and was placed for adoption with a loving forever family.

On Apr. 10, Carol Horkowitz, Arts chair for the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, coordinated another lovely evening of music at the clubhouse. The Frost School of Music’s Jason Charos Jazz Quartet performed for the mini fundraiser with proceeds directed to Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s free children’s dental clinic, Camp Boggy Creek and other outreach programs.

Finally, Rotary Club of Coral Gables members and guests gathered at the offices of Miami’s Community Newspapers for a party celebrating the Fifth Friday in March. Past RRCG president Sally Baumgartner coordinates this event whenever there are five Fridays in a month and members take turns providing the venue. Thirty or more people enjoyed the evening and had a chance to meet Publisher Michael Miller and tour the offices and video production studios.

Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and make a difference.
