The General Federation of Women’s Club’s Coral Gables Woman’s Club hosted Col. Catherine “Cady” Coleman (USAF ret.) on May 2, #nationalspaceday.

Col. Coleman — an American chemist, engineer and former NASA astronaut — is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and a six-month expedition on the International Space Station (ISS), logging over 180 days in space. Her talk served to entertain as well as raise funds for the GFWC Florida President’s Project, the “Flight to Honor.”

“Flight to Honor” is an all-inclusive flight to Washington, DC, in October for 172 female veterans within the GFWC Florida organization. This Is unique in that it will be the first all female veterans flight in Florida. The veterans will travel to GFWC FL headquarters in Lakeland, enjoy dinner and then be transported to their hotel. They will rise early for their chartered flight to Washington, DC, where they will see the sights and visit Arlington Cemetery. After a full day in DC, they will board the plane and return to Lakeland for another overnight stay and leave for home the next day.

All costs will be paid for by GFWC FL clubs and every club in Florida is holding fundraisers to make this happen. Remarkably, with many months to go, they already more than halfway there.

CGWC’s President’s Project chair Meredeth McKissick, collaborated with Books & Books in Coral Gables and with help from Coleman’s good friends John and Diane Flaherty and GFWC FL District 11 director Dr. Ruth Martinez to have her present her book, Sharing Space: An Astronaut’s Guide to Mission, Wonder, and Making Change (2024).

In the book, Col.Coleman relates her experiences, overcoming systemic challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field, and lessons on leadership and teamwork. Members and guests listened to her presentation, asking questions and having their books signed.

As an additional honor for the club, GFWC Florida president Sara Dessureau and her husband drove down to attend the event as this is her pet project.
