Changing Seas Returns with a Captivating New Season

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Mark your calendars for June 19th as South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, & Health Channel) proudly announces the return of its EMMY® Award-winning original series, Changing Seas, to WPBT and WXEL with four exciting new episodes.

Season 16 kicks off with a journey back in time. In Ancient Adriatic: Croatia’s Sunken History, archaeologists and conservators meticulously uncover and document an ancient Roman ship submerged in sediment for nearly 2000 years. The preserved wooden hull and recovered artifacts offer new clues into the region’s maritime history and cultural heritage.

Next, take an underwater flight with the most elegant fish in the sea. Despite its designation as globally “endangered,” relatively little is known about the white spotted eagle ray’s ecology and life history. Eagle Rays: Soaring on Spotted Wings, follows Florida scientists as they utilize cutting-edge technology to gain deeper insights into the movement and diet of this beautiful fish — allowing them to experience the world from a ray’s point of view for the first time.

Join us the following week for a journey to Maui, where dedicated scientists, land restorationists, and volunteers are drawing upon the ancient wisdom of the Hawaiian people to revive the island’s cherished ecosystems. Maui Aloha ‘Āina: From Mauka to Makai explores how even amidst profound loss in the wake of recent wildfires, resilient islanders are committed to reconnecting waterways from the mountains to the ocean — to heal their island home.

And finally, prepare to be charmed by adorable marine weasels in California Sea Otters: Life on the Edge. Threatened southern sea otters are voracious predators that need to eat the equivalent of 25% of their body weight a day to survive. Once nearly hunted to extinction, these endearing marine mammals have made a slow comeback on the golden state’s central coast, demonstrating their essential role as ecosystem engineers.

“We are thrilled to share such a diverse lineup of ocean stories with our viewers this season,” says Series Producer Alexa Elliott. “We hope they will inspire our audiences and widen perspectives on how to care for our precious ocean planet.”
