1960 – Doris Ison began advocating for healthcare access for the poor in South Dade.
1969 – Rudy Juarez, founder of Organized Migrants in Community Action and attorney Joseph Segor secure a federal grant to open a medical center for farmworkers, which was later named Martin Luther King Jr. Clinica Campesina at the urging of Doris Ison, who serves on the board.
1969 – Dade County commission recommends the development of a primary healthcare system in South Dade.
1971 – CHI incorporates as the healthcare system for South Dade County and opens the South Dade Community Health Center in trailers located in Goulds.
1972 – CHI hires first executive director, George Emmett Rice.
1973 – CHI’s Martin Luther King Kr. Clinica Campesina opens.
1974 – South Dade Center moves from trailers into a new 80,000-square-foot facility.
1976 – South Dade Center is renamed Doris Ison Community Health Center.
1977 – Sen. Edward W. Kennedy visits CHI.
1979 – CHI contracts with Dade County Public Schools to provide school-based services, beginning in Homestead.
1980 – John Trenholm is named executive director.
1984 – Brodes H. Hartley Jr. joins CHI as executive director in May.
1996 – CHI opens centers in Everglades and South Dade.
1997 – Names first women medical directors, Dr. Priscilla Knighton at Doris Ison Community Health Center and Dr. Madhvi Sisodia at MLKCC
1998 – Naranja Health Center opens.
2007 – CHI opens Marathon Community Health Center.
2013 – CHI open centers in Coconut Grove and South Miami.
2014 – Tavernier center opens in The Keys.
2014 – CHI becomes the first community health center in the State of Florida to house a teaching health center.
2015 – West Kendall Health Center opens.
2016 – CHI becomes the first federally qualified health center in the nation to be awarded the Florida Governor’s Sterling Award for performance excellence.
2018 – CHI launches it first mobile dental unit.
2020 – Marathon Health Center reopening after extensive renovation.
2020 – CHI becomes the first to offer COVID-19 drive-through testing in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
2020 – CHI breaks ground on the Children’s Crisis Center.
2020 – CHI launches Mobile Medical Van for the underserved community.
2021 – CHI celebrates 50 years of providing quality healthcare to the people of South Florida.
