NEWS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF DR. STEVE GALLON III
The City of Miami Gardens recently honored Dr. Steve Gallon III with a formal resolution sponsored by Councilman Reggie Leon, recognizing his transformative leadership in District 1 of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Since his election in 2016—when District 1 had the highest number of failing schools—every “F” and “D” school has been eliminated. Today, 100% of District 1 schools are rated A, B, or C, with nearly 75% earning an A or B, including both Miami Gardens high schools—Miami Carol City and Miami Norland — rated “A.”
The resolution also highlighted Dr. Gallon’s leadership in securing nearly $2 billion in funding for teacher pay and school safety, advancing achievement gap monitoring policy, delivering over $200 million in school construction improvements, and establishing the District 1 Student of the Month program and the District 1 Black History Month Showcase, now entering its 10th year. Councilman Leon also presented Dr. Gallon with a street sign designated for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., which he became a member in 1988 while attending Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida.
City officials praised Dr. Gallon as a respected national voice for equity, opportunity, and access in public education and expressed appreciation for his unwavering commitment to the children and families of Miami Gardens.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition from the City of Miami Gardens,” said Dr. Gallon. “This progress belongs to our principals, teachers, students, parents, and community partners who refused to accept failure as the norm. Together, we have proven that excellence is possible in every zip code—and we will continue the work to ensure every child has access to opportunity, equity, and success.”
